Downtown New York City in the early 90s was a magical place and time for rock music, with a burgeoning scene and hip clubs galore. Striding like conquering giants into this fertile milieu came THE PINEAPPLES, whose gigs inspired the reverence of fans and other musicians alike. They took the scene by storm, sharing the stages of CBGBs, Maxwell’s, the Knitting Factory and Brownie’s with the likes of Hole, Helmet, Sonic Youth, Lunachicks, White Zombie – hell, even Juliana Hatfield. They pushed their original sound, a heavy and heady blend of punk, prog and psych, to dizzying new heights, releasing on their own label the 7” single CRYSTALLINE and 10” EP CACAHUATES, both recorded and mixed by indie legend Kramer (proprietor of ShimmyDisc Records, partner of Anne Magnussen in the band Bongwater, producer of King Missile, Urge Overkill, Galaxy 500 and countless others). Kramer liked them so much that he released their next EP, ALL FOR WHAT, on his own label: this garnered a Single Of The Week in Britain’s New Musical Express. The EP caught the ears of London indie Placebo Records, who brought them to the UK for a triumphant two-month tour of England and Scotland, and put out another EP, SHE BRINGS ME DOWN. After returning to the US, the CBGBs staff voted them one of NYC’s best bands, and they were invited to play at CB’s 20th Anniversary celebration, after which they took a long hiatus. Now, at long last, the original four members of THE PINEAPPLES have regrouped to bring their glorious, hard hitting, utterly original brand of ROCK into the 21st Century with the release of TWICE ON THE PIPE, their first full-length album, with its 7” single SUMMERGREEN. Recorded and co-produced by Justin Pizzoferrato (Dinosaur Jr, Pixies, Frank Black, Sonic Youth), TWICE ON THE PIPE is a heavyweight knockout.
